September 2020 – The Keys becomes Paillard
New chapter, new name, new album!
Torn suitcases on 2017’s threshold. Back in the ol’ Europe after a Ghanaian stopover following a long Canadian stay. The Keys slowly morphs into « Paillard », foreigner English turns into familiar French, the songwriter dives into what they call « chanson ». Here is a vagabond trying his hand at a sedentary format, putting away his epic arrangements to get closer to the marrow of words. Lyrics fall drop by drop, fingers look for new things between old strings. Berlin takes hold of me and the reverse becomes true. Encounters revive the desire to tell stories, to turn these stiched up tales into a whole, an ensemble, an object even. The recording adventure will be done as always as a team made up of old companions (Andy Lévêque a.k.a. Mister Bishop, Andrew Barker) and new friends (Claire Weidmann from Bocage, Dennis Jüngel, the rhythm section of Perilymph) each intervening with care in this delicate process of capturing fleeting thrills. Almost two years of fermentation will follow. Just enough to refine the harmonies, to air out each syllable, to ensure the proper sedimentation of each edge of the songs. All this to say that « Tout Ça Pour Dire » – an album of French songs of my making – will be released into the world on October 3rd, 2020. Which is incidentally my first musical release since « Now Is Not A Good Time » as The Keys in 2016.
